Pohang City announced on the 10th that it held a working-level council meeting on global talent development under the Education Advancement Special Zone initiative, with representatives from four local universities — POSTECH, Handong University, Sunlin University, and Pohang University — in attendance.
During the meeting, the universities shared the outcomes of their ongoing educational programs and discussed future plans and possible areas of collaboration. Each university also introduced its own specialized programs, highlighting individual strengths and exchanging ideas to expand educational synergy within the region.
Designated as a pilot area for the Education Advancement Special Zone in 2024, Pohang City is operating the initiative through 2026. Following the pilot period, a final evaluation will determine whether it will receive full designation in 2027. The city is focusing on two main pillars — global talent development and next-generation battery workforce training — to establish an innovative, university-centered education ecosystem.
At the meeting, POSTECH presented its “Youth Mathematical AI Academy,” a program that integrates mathematics and artificial intelligence to foster future-oriented learning. Handong University introduced programs in English language learning with native speakers and literacy enhancement, while Sunlin University and Pohang University showcased programs centered on major experience and career exploration, respectively.
Through this meeting, Pohang City aims to build a regular consultative framework with local universities and to continuously share and expand the achievements of the special zone project.
A city official stated, “This working-level council meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Pohang’s universities to nurture local youth into future global leaders. We will continue to actively support programs that help young people develop global competencies and design their future right here in Pohang.”
