Professor Cheol-Hyun Cho Begins an Exciting New Research Journey at POSTECH !
Professor Cheol-Hyun Cho, a world-renowned authority in symplectic geometry and mirror symmetry, has joined the Department of Mathematics at POSTECH as a full-time faculty member effective July 1, 2025.
Professor Cho earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from KAIST in 1996 and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2003. He has served as a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Seoul National University, where he actively engaged in research and the mentorship of the next generation of scholars. In addition, he has conducted research at prestigious institutions overseas, including Northwestern University and the University of Toronto, contributing significantly to the advancement of the Korean mathematical community.
His primary research areas include symplectic geometry, Lagrangian Floer theory, and mirror symmetry. Professor Cho has published numerous papers in leading international journals and has been invited to speak at major global conferences and symposia. He has received multiple accolades, including the Korean Mathematical Society’s Excellent Paper Award, and secured research funding such as the Samsung Future Technology Foundation grant and a leadership role as Deputy Director of the SRC Center for Quantum Structure Modules.
Professor Cho continues to serve on editorial boards, including that of the Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, and plays an active role in organizing academic events such as the East Asian Symplectic Conference. He is also deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of mathematicians.
The Department of Mathematics at POSTECH warmly welcomes Professor Cho and looks forward to his vital contributions in advancing leading-edge research in symplectic geometry and mathematical physics.
