[Daegu = Newsis] Reporter Jeonghwa Kim — On April 30, the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education announced that it will hold a Public Mathematics Lecture aimed at enhancing students' mathematical skills.

The lecture will take place on May 31 at 10 a.m. in the main auditorium of Daegu Science High School, with approximately 300 high school students and teachers expected to participate.

In the lecture, Professor Hyeongju Hwang from the Department of Mathematics at POSTECH will present on the topic “The Intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Mathematics.” He will explain how AI algorithms are based on mathematical principles through various research examples and emphasize that mathematics is fundamental for the proper development and application of AI.

The event will also include a career guidance session introducing possible career paths for students majoring in mathematics.

Professor Hwang is recognized as a researcher who moves beyond the conventional case-based paradigm of machine learning to uncover the mathematical foundations underlying AI operations. His work focuses on applying mathematical AI research to solve complex challenges in industries such as semiconductors and biomedical fields.

Superintendent Eunhee Kang of the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education stated, “I hope students realize the usefulness of mathematics and develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills through in-depth mathematical study.”
