Ulsan Math Culture Center Hosts Inaugural Public Math Lecture for Middle and High School Students

- On May 24, the Ulsan Math Culture Center in Buk-gu hosted the first Public Mathematics Lecture at the Big Bang Hall of the Ulsan Science Center, under the theme “Mathematics: The Language Behind Artificial Intelligence.” The event was attended by over 300 middle and high school students from the Ulsan area.

On May 24, the Ulsan Math Culture Center in Buk-gu, Ulsan, held its first Public Mathematics Lecture at the Big Bang Hall of the Ulsan Science Center.

The lecture series aims to break the common perception of mathematics as a difficult and rigid subject by inviting experts to explain how math is applied in everyday life and across various fields in an accessible and engaging way.

The inaugural lecture, titled “Mathematics: The Language Behind Artificial Intelligence”, was attended by over 300 middle and high school students from the Ulsan area.

Professor Jinwoo Jang from the Department of Mathematics at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) was invited as the keynote speaker. He explored the core concepts of artificial intelligence from both a linguistic (humanities) and mathematical (STEM) perspective. Professor Jang emphasized that while AI may appear to “think and speak,” it is fundamentally powered by continuous mathematical computations. His talk was tailored to the students’ level and delivered in a way that was both easy to understand and intellectually stimulating.

Through this lecture, students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of mathematics as the foundational language of AI, explored problem-solving approaches using mathematical thinking, and reflected on how logical and mathematical reasoning can shape careers in science and engineering.
