Kyung Whan Kwun Memorial Conference Held on March 28
On March 28, the Kyung Whan Kwun Memorial Conference was held at the POSCO International Center Auditorium, POSTECH, to commemorate the first anniversary of the late Professor Kyung Whan Kwun’s passing. The event gathered renowned mathematicians and former students to honor his academic contributions and legacy.
Professor Kyung Whan Kwun earned his bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University before obtaining his master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He later served as a professor at Florida State University and Michigan State University, as well as a researcher at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. From 1990 to 1999, he was a professor in the Department of Mathematics at POSTECH, where he also held key positions such as department chair, dean of graduate studies, and director of research. Even after his retirement, he continued to support the next generation of scholars by establishing the Kyung Whan Kwun Fund, contributing significantly to the advancement of mathematics in Korea.
The memorial conference featured presentations by distinguished scholars, including Professors Baek Hyunryeol (KAIST), Choi JaeKyung (KIAS), Keum Jonghae (KIAS), Kim In-Kang (KIAS), Kim Kangtae (POSTECH), Kim Hyuk (Seoul National University), Kim Do-Han (Seoul National University), Lee Kyungbae (University of Oklahoma), Oh Yong-Geun (POSTECH), and Park Jongil (Seoul National University). They discussed Professor Kwun’s profound influence on mathematical research and education.
The event provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on Professor Kwun's passion for academia and dedication to mentoring students, with participants reaffirming their commitment to carrying forward his legacy.
