POSTECH Holds Special Lecture for ‘Pi (π) Day
POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) hosted a special lecture in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) to celebrate ‘Pi (π) Day’ on March 14, also recognized as World Mathematics Day.
The event took place at 1:59 PM on March 14 at the Change Up Ground Event Hall in Pohang. This timing was chosen to reflect the approximate value of π (3.14), adding symbolic significance to the occasion. The lecture was divided into two sessions: the first session featured Professor Jinwoo Jang from the Department of Mathematics at POSTECH, who delivered a lecture on algebraic geometry, while the second session was led by Professor Youngdae Yun from APCTP, who discussed gravity and quantum mechanics.
During the lectures, in-depth explanations were provided on each topic, along with discussions on the impact of mathematics and physics on modern science. Professor Jinwoo Jang introduced the role of algebraic geometry in contemporary mathematics and its potential applications, while Professor Youngdae Yun explored the relationship between quantum mechanics and gravity, captivating the audience.
The event attracted approximately 120 attendees, including students, researchers, and members of the general public with an interest in mathematics and physics, fostering an engaging academic atmosphere. To further embrace the spirit of ‘Pi (π) Day,’ all participants were treated to pizza, making the occasion even more enjoyable.
