ILJU Academic and Cultural Research Foundation

“ILJU Academy and Culture Foundation” was found on July 19, 1990 by Mr. Im-Yong Lee (1921–1996), also known as ILJU, the founder of Taekwang Industrial Co., Ltd. Since its foundation, it has steadily provided scholarships and research fund to various educational institutions, researchers and students. ILJU Academy and Culture Foundation has spent over KRW 30.2 billion so far, and also manages ILJU & SEONHWA Gallery and Media Archive to support development of art and culture in Korea.

The aim of ILJU School of Mathematics to intoroduce recent research problems on mathematics including basic material so that graduate students and post-doctoral fellows are encouraged to solve them and also to increase communication and friendship between participants.

Registration is now available. Due to limited funds, we kindly request that the participants use their own resource for travel and accommodation. We have booked a block of rooms in the dormitory, so please indicate at the time of registration if you wish to stay in a dorm room. Alternatively you may stay at a hotel near Postech. We will try to support the cost for your stay if you are a student or a junior scholar who does not have other funding sources.

Theta Festival 2011 aims to be an enjoyable comprehensive introduction to the rich subject of theta correspondence and related topics which are among the central themes in number theory. This is a rare instructional program designed for students and non-experts who wish to learn the theory of theta correspondence seriously but do not know where to start or how to proceed. Emphasis will be on the representation-theoretic treatment of theta as this will clarify the local-global structure, lead to powerful techniques, and is flexible for generalizations to higher rank groups.

In mini courses we focus not on the most recent results but rather classical results, namely the theta correspondence between Mp(2) and SO(3). (This is a reinterpretation of the famous Shimura correspondence between interal weight modular forms and half-integral weight forms.) The participants will absorb a wide range of techniques and results in the case of (Mp(2),SO(3)) which prepare them for their future study of the general case. Mini courses will be played in three main themes: local theta (Ichino), global theta (Gan) and arithmetic theta (Liu). More detail can be found in the course descriptions.

Prior to mini courses, preliminary lectures will be given by S.W. Shin on Aug 13–14 starting on Saturday afternoon, in order to warm up the participants who are not familiar with representation theory or theta correspondence. Various basic concepts and facts will be reviewed.

The finale of the program is a one-day workshop on recent developments, covering a very broad scope of theta. The research talks are expected to stimulate the interaction between Korean and international participants as well as to expose the audience to current research trends.
